Children organise a sponsor run for War Child
“It was so cool to get all these envelopes with money for War Child from all the children that took part in the sponsor run!”
Sterre, Cato, Jip, Lima, Pieta and Laura came up with a plan for an action to help children affected by war. The six girls planned a sponsored run and brought their idea to the director of their school. War Child supported them with tips and promotion material. 270 children from the school took part, going from door to door to raise sponsorship money. They raised € 7,594.11 and came to War Child’s head office in Amsterdam to hand over their donation. This amount allows 632 war children to participate in War Child programme; a great result, made possible by this child-led initiative!
“Get your shoes off for War Child”
Every elementary school in Holland participates in a yearly walking event called Avond4daagse. Four evenings in a row, children walk a distance of 5, 10 or 15 kilometres. A group of four children – Imke, Nina, Susanne and Kate – were upset that, in other countries, children have to fight in wars. They wanted to raise awareness and money for these children. So they came up with the idea of completing the four day walk barefoot. Because they thought children in conflict affected areas often don’t have shoes. They asked their family, friends and neighbours to support their cause. After four days of walking barefoot they raised € 362.20 and received their well-earned medals. Participation of children and young people is crucial in building sustainable, lasting peace.
