Girls take part in sports activities

"When I’m playing football, I’m not thinking of the things that happened to me. I can make fun with the other children"

Kizza

Participation of girls in sports is rather limited, as they are generally not invited to take part. Therefore War Child organised weekly events in South Sudan for boys and girls to play sports together. That is a first step.

Secondly, after the games, War Child started a dialogue with the youth about their experiences of playing together. They were sceptical in the beginning. However, as the activity continued and they were able to reflect on issues concerning the participation of girls in their community, they expressed great enthusiasm about the new activity. In this example young people were included in the beginning of the programme development process, as well as in the evaluation. Sometimes it’s key to allow them to experience something new that maybe they would not have thought of before.
